May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. It is crucial to recognize the role that public procurement plays in providing essential services to individuals in need.

Public Procurement plays a critical role in shaping the delivery and quality of mental health services. By prioritizing effective procurement practices, governments can support the provision of high-quality, accessible, and equitable mental health care that meets the needs of individuals and communities.

As we reflect on the importance of prioritizing mental health, Mikayla Johnson, Procurement Consultant with Civic Initiatives said, "In my role at the State of Nebraska, I worked for the Division of Behavioral Health. Some of the key aspects of my job on the community side were working with contracts and grants to administer mental health programs. During my time, I witnessed the impact that effective procurement strategies can have on securing the necessary goods and services that directly impact health, such as medications, therapeutic interventions, and support services. Ultimately influencing the quality, accessibility, and affordability of mental health services and affecting the well-being of individuals and communities.

In the State of Nebraska, the Division is very fortunate to have federal, state, and local funds that are dedicated to mental health services. The role of the Division is to provide public safety, allow for statewide high-quality mental health services, and ensure cost-effectiveness. The Division runs state regional centers and community-based mental health services comprised of a diverse array of services provided by numerous external agencies. As a Program Administrator, I was responsible for overseeing the administration of the contracts with the six Regional Behavioral Health Authorities, the Rural Response Hotline, and the set of contracts between the Division and a community psychiatric hospital."
The diverse procurement processes employed play a vital role in serving a growing number of Nebraskans while ensuring fiscal responsibility. The critical role of each State's Behavioral Health Authority cannot be overstated; their provision of training, prevention programs, hotlines, and life-saving services is invaluable.

This illustrates a key intersection between public procurement and mental health services – the selection of providers. Through careful procurement processes, governments can identify and contract with qualified providers who offer evidence-based practices and culturally competent care. This ensures that individuals receive high-quality services that are tailored to their needs, promoting better mental health outcomes.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, let us honor the tireless dedication and impactful work of these essential organizations, while also acknowledging the crucial role played by procurement processes behind the scenes.
